Active Northumberland celebrated National Fitness Day in style this year with over six thousand Northumberland residents joining in the fun and spirit of the day. We hosted a number of events and activities, as all of centres came together in a celebration of fitness.
On Wednesday 20th September there were a range of free swim, gym, and fitness classes on offer - with something for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.
One of the key events of the day was held at the new Morpeth Sports and Leisure Centre. Instructor Leona Petch from the Les Mills headquarters came up to teach three amazing free fitness master classes alongside Active Northumberland's expert instructors with over two hundred people attending. These customers were also among the first in the world to try out the brand-new Les Mills Shapes class.
Meanwhile, up to four hundred children from sixteen schools across the county also joined in the day, enjoying bowling and Clip ‘n Climb at Concordia, Wentworth, and Ponteland Leisure Centres.
This year’s National Fitness Day 2023 campaign theme “Your Health Is for Life” called for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to come together to recognise the importance of prioritising being active for our mental wellbeing as well as physical health.
Mark Warnes, chief executive of Active Northumberland said:
“National Fitness Day celebrates the power of exercise, and it was really encouraging to see so many people turn up on the day – exercising with friends, families or as part of a class community.
“No matter what your age or fitness level it is never too late to start. There have been so many inspiring success stories across the county from people who have taken that first small step into exercise with us.
“Active Northumberland’s team of friendly and experienced colleagues are always on hand to offer plenty of help and support along the way so if you missed National Fitness Day and want to find out more, explore our website and do get in touch.”
Northumberland County Councillor, Jeff Watson, Cabinet member for Promoting Healthy Lives added:
“The role physical activity plays in our lives is vital in supporting our physical and mental health and wellbeing. It can be life changing and literally lifesaving.
“The free activities on offer were a great way to find out more about what your local leisure centre has to offer, and it was fantastic to see so many people of all ages unite and celebrate the fun of fitness.”
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on the day to celebrate this truly memorable event.
