Katrina is one of our friendly Swim Instructors who helps teach our Learn to Swim programme at Active Northumberland. Here's a what she has to say about her journey to becoming an instructor with us...
'Hi, my name is Katrina Gilbert and I have recently qualified as a Level 2 Swimming Instructor through the Institute of Swimming Recruitment Academy. I am now teaching swimming with Active Northumberland.
My previous career was as a primary school teacher in which I worked for 29 years. Having decided that I would like a change of direction and career, I was told about the Recruitment Academy and the training involved. This seemed like the perfect opportunity for me. I felt that I could make a positive impact combining my teaching skills, my enjoyment of working with children and adults, and my love of swimming.
With the Institute of Swimming, I first trained as a Level 1 Swimming Assistant, whilst shadowing experienced Swimming Instructors in three of Active Northumberland’s Centres.
All the instructors and swimming staff were professional, inspiring and very supportive, giving me the opportunity to practice my Swimming Assistant skills and activity ideas, while also encouraging me to begin my training as a Level 2 Swimming Instructor. The Level 2 course was a very interesting and thorough induction which ensured that when I passed my training and became fully qualified, I was able to start teaching with immediate effect.
The Institute of Swimming runs a large variety of courses and CPD sessions allowing instructors to further develop their skills, teaching both children and adults of a variety of ages, experience and ability. I have recently completed training which allows me to teach school swimming lessons, baby and toddler groups and more experienced swimmers. There are also many other courses I hope to complete in the future!
I am thoroughly enjoying my change of career. I look forward to further developing my skills and experience, helping others to benefit from the physical and well-being effects and the sheer enjoyment of swimming.'
