Berwick’s new leisure centre opening date revealed

Berwick’s new leisure centre opening date revealed

Excitement is building in and around Berwick as the town’s new flagship sports and leisure centre prepares to open its doors to the public on Tuesday 8 January.

The fantastic £22.6 million facility, funded by Northumberland County Council and run by Active Northumberland will provide state-of-the- art facilities and a whole new customer experience for all ages of the local community.

Situated on the site of the current leisure centre at Tweedmouth, the centre is being built in two phases and it is the biggest phase, phase 1 that is opening to the public on the 8th

In just a matter of days residents will be able to enjoy the new swimming pools, relax in the spa or get active in the fitness suites. There’s a café selling delicious food, a children’s soft play area, an indoor bowling green which will be very popular with local clubs, and a sensory room for those who are less able.

In the pool hall there is a five-lane, 25m swimming pool, a learner pool with an adjustable floor and a leisure area which includes race slides and aqua play. For those wanting a bit of rest and relaxation there is a new spa facility which includes a sauna, steam room, salt room, experience showers and spa pool.

There is also a brand-new state of the art gym and fitness area and three fitness studios. One of the studios will be used as a dedicated spinning studio with Technogym bikes while the other two will be used for fitness classes, yoga and Pilates.

Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, cabinet member for healthy lives said:

“This is a really exciting time for the town and what I would like to say to the residents of Berwick and beyond is that it is your centre so please try and use it if you can.  Whatever your age or fitness level the new centre offers something for everyone with lots of opportunities for fun, for fitness and relaxation.

“I would also like to pay tribute to everyone involved in this project for working so hard, despite the setback of the pandemic, to ensure the centre was built and up and running in record time. It’s been an enormous achievement and a fantastic team effort.

Mark Warnes, chief executive of Active Northumberland said:

“This fantastic new sports facility has been planned to cater for the whole community including the elderly, school groups, families, sports clubs and social groups.

“We are looking forward to welcoming new members and customers to the new centre for the very first time, and our friendly and experienced leisure team who work with people of all ages will be ready to help and support you and to help you achieve your own personal fitness or wellness goals.”

Residents can pay-as-they-go when they visit the centre, but can also become an Active member for just 85p per day which works out cheaper for regular users and has many additional benefits.
