Newbiggin launches youth sports project

Newbiggin launches youth sports project
An exciting new and affordable youth sports project has just been launched in Newbiggin.
New sports clubs, aimed at young people aged  8 and upwards, are now running from Newbiggin Sports and Community Centre for just £1 per session.
On Monday evenings between 5 - 6pm there are fun football sessions,  suitable for 8-15 year olds.
On Thursday evenings between 5 - 6pm there is a multi sports session (featuring activities such as cricket, dodgeball, badminton and football) suitable for young people aged 10 years and upwards.
The new sports initiative came about after consultation with the local young people found that they felt they did not have enough to do in their community, especially during term time.
Active Northumberland has joined forces with Newbiggin Town Council,  the Youth Service, and Street Games to develop the project and provide more and affordable activities for the young people of the town. The classes are being subsidised by the town council.
Community Sport Officer, Jake Preece said:
“ We run a very successful school holiday activity programme in Newbiggin which is always well attended but there was a clear wish from young people for more activities during the term time, that didn’t cost too much.
“ We’ve listened to what they had to say and we’ve improved the community provision. We now want to get the word out that these new classes are available.  They are relaxed and fun and anyone interested should just come along on the night.”
If the youth classes prove successful it is hoped that the idea can be replicated in other areas of Northumberland.
