Active Northumberland have worked with local swimming clubs; Alnwick Dolphins ASC, Ashington ASC, Blyth Lifesaving & Swimming Club, Morpeth ASC and Tynedale ASC, to provide greater competitive swimming opportunities for young people from Northumberland. This has led to the creation of a new opportunity for our county's best young swimmers, the Northumberland Development Squad.
Currently, Northumberland young swimmers with potential and commitment to excel are having to travel outside of Northumberland, primarily Newcastle, to access suitable high performance level provision and in doing so they are obligated to compete for Newcastle at regional and national level. As you will appreciate this travel time and cost is a real barrier for parents and their children. The Northumberland Development Squad will be under the direction of a coordinated, highly proficient, coaching and volunteer team representative of the constituent Northumberland Swimming Clubs.
As the new squad is launched, the fantastic facilities on offer at Ashington Leisure Centre have been chosen to be the hub facility of the squad.
We, therefore do need to inform you that to enable the Northumberland Development Squad sessions to take place, we have to amend the pool programming at Ashington. Therefore, on Monday and Thursday evenings, 6.30pm - 8.30pm there will be no access for public swimming sessions. Instead the period will facilitate the Northumberland Development Squad as well as Ashington ASC sessions.
To ensure customers do not miss out, we have insured Swim for All sessions at nearby Concordia or Blyth Leisure Centre pools are available during these times, which are free to access by any members with us as part of your membership package.
We are excited to be able to support the creation of the Northumberland Development Squad and look forward to seeing the young people of Northumberland flying the flag for the county.
