Local girls qualify as Wentworth swimming instructors

Local girls qualify as Wentworth swimming instructors

Three local teenagers with a passion for swimming  have qualified as swimming instructors and are now taking classes at Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham.
Millie Robertson,  Nancy Mulholland and Zoe-Claire Trespaderne have recently completed  swimming instructor courses which have involved a mix of practical training and classroom theory. Areas covered in the training included core aquatic skills, the use of equipment, lesson planning as well as identifying anxiety in swimmers, communication skills and the use of motivational techniques.

Zoe attends Haydon Bridge High School and is taking her A levels this summer. She said:
“ My love of swimming is enabling me to teach some amazing kids a sport I am passionate about and one which is also an important life skill.  I’ve always had an interest in sport and spent a week at Wentworth doing some work experience, loving every minute of it, especially working with the children.  Afterwards I started to do some courses with Active Northumberland to build up my knowledge and qualifications. As well as swimming instruction, I now have qualifications in trampolining and gymnastic coaching and hope to be able to increase my work hours at Wentworth after completing my A levels.”

Mark Seymour, head of swimming at Active Northumberland said:
“ We like to support and nurture local talent and all three girls have undertaken their training and qualifications at Wentworth while studying for their A levels. They have now committed to teaching weekly swimming lessons at the centre which enables them to earn some money and get some great work experience  while studying for their futures.

“Active Northumberland run hundreds of  swimming lessons across the county. We are often on the look out for swimming instructors and we are able to offer flexible employment which can fit around study or other work commitments. While  good swimming skills are important, being friendly, enthusiastic, reliable and able to interact with children are the key qualities we are looking for.”
