Ponteland's very first free Active Northumberland Health Walk got off to a great start with 52 happy walkers turning up to enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits that regular walking brings.
The two mile walk took a route through Ponteland Park and along the old railway bridleway, providing a great opportunity for all those taking part to stretch the legs and meet new people.
Gordon Allan, the walk leader said: "It was great to see so many enthusiastic people join our first walk. Everyone was very friendly and given the smiles at the end I think everyone enjoyed themselves. I hope to see them all again in future weeks. It shows there is a demand for community led health initiatives in Ponteland and I am grateful that both the local medical practices are supporting our walks."
Lorraine Oliver, West Northumberland Health Walks Co-ordinator for Active Northumberland added: "The small team of volunteers have worked very hard over the past few months planning the walks and being trained as walk leaders. It was lovely to see all that effort rewarded with a great turn out. The volunteers have already planned weekly walks for the remainder of the year. I am sure this group has a very successful future."
The free weekly walks are open to everyone and last between an hour and an hour and a half. The walks are for people who want gentle exercise, enjoy being outdoors and want to explore the local network of excellent footpaths and bridleways. It is also a great way to meet new people, or socialise with your friends.
The walks are all on good footpaths and require no specialist equipment other than a pair of stout walking shoes or trainers and a jacket to keep you warm and dry. The walk volunteers will make sure everyone is safe and nobody gets left behind.
The group would still like a few more volunteer leaders and anyone interested should contact Lorraine or Gordon for more information.
The walking group meets every Tuesday at 10:30am at Ponteland Leisure Centre where you will be guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome.
