Get on your bike with new low-cost cycle hire at Wallington.

The National Trust have partnered with British Cycling and HSBC UK to help more
people get active outdoors through a new discounted cycle hire offer at Wallington,
Northumberland.

The cycle hire is a low-cost and easy solution for families and adults wanting to get outdoors,
closer to nature and improve their cycling skills without having to worry about bringing their
own wheels.

The hire kit includes everything needed for a freewheeling expedition including helmets,
trailers for towing youngsters and a range of adults and children’s bikes.

HSBC UK is lead partner to British Cycling, with a focus on getting more people on bikes
and the aim to encourage a greener, fitter, healthier country.

The cycle hire was launched at Wallington on National Fitness Day (Wednesday 26th
September) with children from Belsay Primary School putting their cycling skills to the test
and trying out the bikes.

Gillian Mason, Visitor Experience Manager at Wallington said:

“Whether you’re regular cyclists or newcomers to two wheels, the new scheme at Wallington offers the perfect
opportunity for the whole family to let off steam and get fit outdoors in traffic-free and
beautiful surroundings.

“We’ve got bike sizes to fit all as well as accessories, tag alongs and balance bikes available
to hire at very affordable prices, we're right on track to give you an action-packed, cycling
day out.”

The new scheme gives more families the opportunity to explore the wider estate along the
dedicated Dragon Cycle trail, built thanks to support from Sport England. This safe, entry
level trail is the ideal way to get out and about, with a choice of two routes, an easy 1.5km
Green route, perfect for little legs, or a more challenging, but still family-friendly, 4.5km Blue
route.

Meandering through farm and woodland, with gentle uphill climbs and an exhilarating
downhill stretch, the trail offers wide reaching views across the Northumberland countryside
and winds through a labyrinth of ancient trees.

Lucky visitors might even spot a deer or two as they zoom through the woods, or catch a
glimpse of one of Wallington’s red squirrels from the wildlife hide en route.
Wallington are working in partnership with Active Northumberland’s school sport programme
to provide opportunities for children to experience new and different activities in outdoor
spaces.

Northumberland County Councillor, Cath Homer, cabinet member with responsibility for
leisure said:

“This is a fantastic initiative to get more families experiencing the great outdoors
and the benefits that cycling has to offer.

“Cycling is an activity which can suit all ages from preschool to the young at heart. It’s also
great for your physical and mental health and for the environment too.”

Experts are on hand to kit users out with everything they need, and will also be offering hints
and tips. Whether its help to teach little ones to manage their own bike or building
confidence in adult riders, the new cycle hire scheme is the perfect opportunity to get more
people cycling and exploring the Northumbrian countryside on two wheels.

Bike hire will cost from £4 for a half day hire. Optional add-ons available at extra cost.
