Morpeth Badminton Club, based at Riverside Leisure Centre, has raised a fantastic £4,000 for a local charity by taking part in a marathon 24 hour badminton session.
Over 90 members ranging from 8 years of age to 75 years of age, including some from other clubs, took part in the event with every penny raised being donated to the local Henry Dancer Day charity that supports children and families with cancer.
This is the sixth Badminton-a-thon that Karen Davison, Riverside Leisure Centre’s Badminton Coach has organised raising a total of £19,000 for local , worthwhile causes.
“I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of all those who helped us to raise this amazing sum of money. Every single penny will go to the chosen charity. I’d like to thank Active Northumberland for providing the courts for free, Yehlex UK and Northumberland Badminton Association for donating shuttles, local businesses for donated raffle prizes and all those taking part who raised sponsorship or made a personal donation.”
The stoic players managed to keep going right through the night. Between 3am and 9am on Sunday morning there were twenty five players taking part with the aim of keeping the badminton shuttle live and active through until the morning.
Karen runs badminton sessions throughout the week at the Riverside Leisure Centre which cater for all ages and standards from complete beginners through to county player and Over 50s.. New members are always very welcome and for those who want more competitive play, they have 3 mixed, 2 mens and 1 ladies team who play in the Northumberland Badminton Association Leagues.
“ We are a thriving club with a great pathway for young players to progress and advance to county level, should they wish to compete. Lots of people do just come to play for fun as badminton is a great form of exercise and very sociable too.” added Karen
