Teens get ACTIVE in Northumberland

Young people in Northumberland are being encouraged to get active with discounted leisure membership and a special new programme of fitness classes.

Young person’s Active Northumberland membership is available at the discounted cost of £26 a month for people aged between 14 and 21.

Tom Scott, 16, from Hexham, signed up for young person's membership with Active Northumberland in December.

Having previously used the gym after school on a 'Pay As You Go' basis, Tom decided to become a member when he realised it would save him money and give him the freedom to use the gym as much as he likes, even if he only has time for a short workout session.

Tom said: “I first started going to the gym at Wentworth last year on a pay as you go basis. I was going along three to four times a week after school, so it made sense for me to become a member.”

“Going to the gym has really helped increased my fitness levels. I play hockey and cricket and the extra fitness and strength I’ve gained from the gym has made a big difference on the pitch.”

Tom plays hockey for Tynedale Men's first team throughout the winter months and says his gym workouts help with fitness, strength and endurance - essential for this level of hockey.

In the summer, he plays senior cricket as a seam bowler and opening batsman. As a fast bowler, it’s important that he maintains a high level of strength and fitness to avoid injury. Developing his upper body strength in the gym has also helped him gain more pace with his bowling.

He said: “The staff at the centre and the gym are always really friendly and helpful. They’ve given me some good advice about using the equipment correctly and have helped me to come up with an effective training programme.”

“It’s really good now that I’m a member. I can go to the gym as many times as I want during the week. I can even drop in for twenty minutes if I’m short of time.”

Active Northumberland has also introduced a series of classes exclusively for young people. Youngsters aged 14 and 15 can still use the gym for specific sessions under supervision.

The new specialist, instructor-led sessions are designed to give young people more independence. Classes include circuits, indoor cycling, Zumba and gym sessions.

Fitness instructor Katie Forster, 23, runs junior fitness classes, as well as BodyPump, and Grit.

She said: “It’s fantastic that we can offer specialist classes that are tailored towards young people. I love my job as a fitness instructor, especially BodyPump class and focusing on helping people improve their technique. I get such a buzz from teaching the classes and it's great when I can see the smile on people's faces.”

“The classes and special membership price are a great way to help young people in the county to stay active. Whether they want to improve their health, build their strength and fitness to take part in other sports, or just take part to have fun, there is something here for everyone.”

“It’s important for our members to feel relaxed and comfortable when they come to one of our centres no matter what their age or ability. Cardio-busting gym machines aren’t everyone’s thing, so we’re here to offer advice and support when needed to help young people to find an activity to suit them. If you find an activity you enjoy, you are more likely to stick to it.”

“New Active Northumberland members also benefit from five one-to-one gym sessions to help them get to grips with how the equipment works and to develop a personalised fitness plan that is unique to their goals.”

Katie joined the Active Northumberland team five years ago, having previously been a member and gym user herself. She first started working in the cafe at her local Active leisure centre whilst she was still at school, before moving over to working on reception and then becoming a fitness instructor.

Membership costs from £26 a month for young people under the age of 21 and concessions, or £32 per month for adults. Members have unlimited access to 450 weekly fitness classes, 15 gyms, 10 swimming pools, one-to-one personal training sessions, and a wide range of leisure facilities.
