Official opening of brand new fitness centre for Druridge Bay
A brand new, state-of-the-art fitness centre has been opened in Druridge Bay.
The new £550,000 project, developed after an extensive public consultation with the local community, has been funded by Northumberland County Council’s capital programme.
The centre is housed in an extension to the local community centre and has been fitted with the latest Technogym fitness equipment, a shower and changing facilities. It will be managed by Active Northumberland whose instructors will be on hand to provide advice and guidance on health and fitness training programmes.
The new centre will also be home to the newly relocated Druridge Bay Boxing Club, which will be moving into its brand new, purpose built room with space to install a full size boxing ring for training and coaching with sessions for beginners to performance level.
Northumberland County Councillor and local ward member for Druridge Bay Scott Dickinson cut the ribbon to officially open the centre on Friday, May 10, ahead of a special public preview event on Saturday.
He said: “This has always been a well-loved community centre but it has now been extended, refurbished and modernised to create a multi-purpose sport and social facility.
“We’ve had many conversations with the local community throughout the scheme where residents made their preferences clear and the work has taken place in two phases.
“The centre has been refreshed both inside and out and will offer a more comprehensive range of activities and classes. I am sure it will be a real focal point for the local community and a space that residents of all ages can use and enjoy. ”
From 2pm on Saturday, 11 March, local people were invited to take a tour and meet the team. There is a range of membership options including a single site membership of £20 per month or pay as you go £3.50 for adults and £2.70 for juniors.
For one day only, local residents were also able to take advantage of Active Northumberland’s special Join for a Coin offer - with a bonus first month costing just one pound when they signed up for a 13 month, multi-site membership.
The new memberships are valid from 8am on Monday 13
th March, when the centre opened to gym users for the first time.
Lorraine Dewison, Chief Executive of Active Northumberland, said: “We are pleased and proud to see this new centre officially opened and to be able to add Hadston to our long list of leisure facilities for the people of Northumberland.
“All our staff work exceptionally hard to provide the best service for our members and the county council is continuing to invest millions of pounds across the county as part of an ongoing improvement plan to ensure our valued members have access to the very best leisure facilities, like this much needed health and fitness hub for Druridge Bay.”
Over the coming weeks and months Active Northumberland will be looking to develop a programme of fitness classes and community and sports clubs.
