From ancient castles to a stunning heritage coastline, quaint villages and market towns to a rugged national park, Northumberland is a backdrop fit for Hollywood blockbusters.
The diversity of the county, the accessible road links and the welcoming ‘can do’ attitude of the people and organisations makes Northumberland an attractive location for filming.
We aim to make filming in the region quicker, easier and good value for money which in return makes it more attractive for production companies to shoot here. And with the likes of Harry Potter, The Railway Man and Macbeth all choosing Northumberland, we’ve proved the county can handle the biggest and best film productions. We also work closely with Northern Film & Media to set up locations and arrange access to highways buildings, as well as providing funding to support development.
Millions are spent on filming in the region which brings in an extraordinary amount to our restaurants, hotels, bars and shops. It also extends out to the local people who may be hired as crew and extras and local companies such as car hire, caterers and cleaning companies.
When Alnwick Castle doubled as Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter movies, the town attracted worldwide attention from fans and visitor numbers soared. There was a multi-million pound boost to the local economy and even now, people are still drawn to the area. Other examples of productions in the area include:
